A chore chart works when a kid can read it, reach it, and mark it themselves. Paper beats apps here — a six-year-old can't check off a phone app, but they can absolutely put a star in a box.
Age-appropriate jobs
- Ages 3–5: put toys away, make the bed (badly is fine), feed the pet with help.
- Ages 6–9: clear their plate, pack their bag, fold easy laundry, water plants.
- Ages 10+: real chores: dishes, trash, vacuuming, simple meals.
What makes a chart stick
- Their own chart, their own marker. Ownership is the motivator.
- Stars now, reward weekly. The star is instant feedback; the weekly reward (pick dinner, movie choice, allowance) keeps the week alive.
- Five jobs max. A wall of chores reads as punishment.
- Post it low. At kid eye level, not adult eye level.
